Thundercat- Concert Review

By Ethan Alfaro

Thundercat played an otherworldly set Saturday night in Salt Lake City at the Union events center with support from LA DJ, KittyCash. The 37-year-old hailing from Los Angeles California whaled on his bass guitar, fast-paced fading into a new song as the last one ended. There were songs that had extended bass solos and times where the band would just jam for an extra 5 minutes. Thundercat played fan favorites like Them changes and Drunk. But he also played songs such as Lost in Space / Great Scott which he opened with, from It is What It Is, his latest record that released in 2020 and was awarded a Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album later on in 2021.

Thundercat is undoubtedly one of the most talented bassists. I knew that walking into the venue, but hearing and seeing him play just the very first song of his set, that thought was solidified and my expectations were outshined. His quick movements and ability to just jam with his band was unlike anything i’ve ever experience in a live performance. Thundercat’s mix of hip-hop, R&B and jazz truly makes him one of the most unique artists out there, and one of the most unique artists I’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing play live.
